What Does 'Flicker-Free' Mean for LED Lights and Why Does It Matter?
Flicker-free LED lighting means the light output does not vary in intensity at a perceptible or harmful frequency. LEDs inherently operate on DC, but cheap drivers use low-frequency PWM (pulse width modulation) for dimming, causing rapid brightness fluctuations. Even invisible flicker (below 100Hz but above 60Hz) can cause eye strain, headaches, fatigue and reduced concentration. In industrial settings, flicker can create a stroboscopic effect making moving machinery appear stationary — a serious safety hazard. The IEEE 1789 standard provides guidelines for "low risk" flicker levels. The EU ErP regulation (effective 2021-2024) mandates flicker testing (PstLM <1.0) and no visible flicker at 100-3000Hz. For offices, schools, healthcare and industrial sites, always specify flicker-free drivers (PWM frequency >3kHz, or analog dimming) and check for IEEE 1789 or similar certification. For video/photography environments, flicker is critical to avoid banding in footage.
