How Does Zigbee Smart Lighting Control Work for Commercial Projects?
Zigbee is a wireless mesh networking protocol operating at 2.4GHz, designed for low-power IoT devices including smart lighting. In a Zigbee mesh network, each device (fixture, sensor, switch) acts as a repeater, extending range and improving reliability. A Zigbee coordinator (hub/gateway) manages the network and can connect to cloud platforms or building management systems. Zigbee supports up to 65,000 devices per network, with individual addressing, grouping, scenes and scheduling. Advantages include no control wiring (lower installation cost), easy reconfiguration, and interoperability between certified devices. Limitations include potential interference with Wi-Fi (use channel management), latency for large networks, and reliance on a gateway. Zigbee is popular in retail, hospitality and smart offices. For large industrial sites, wired systems (DALI) or hybrid solutions may be more reliable.
